⚠️ Be Aware of Counterfeit Beauty Products
The Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) warns consumers to be cautious when buying luxury cosmetics and perfumes online.
Counterfeit or fake beauty products may look convincing — but can contain harmful or banned substances that pose real health risks.
The HPRA has identified fake versions of major brands such as MAC, Urban Decay, and Benefit being sold in Ireland.
🔍 How to Spot a Counterfeit Cosmetic
Look out for these warning signs before you buy:
💰 Price:
-
Is it significantly cheaper than retail or high-street prices? If it seems too good to be true — it usually is.
🏪 Seller:
-
Only buy from licensed or authorised distributors.
-
Most beauty brands list their official retailers on their websites.
📦 Packaging & Product Details:
-
Faded or uneven printing
-
Misspellings on the box or leaflet
-
Slightly different shade or product name
-
Uneven fill levels (e.g. in eyeshadow palettes)
-
Poor-quality mirrors or containers that don’t fit properly
If anything feels off, it probably is.
✅ HPRA Safety Advice
To protect yourself when buying cosmetics or perfume:
-
Check for a European address on the packaging.
This means there’s a company in Europe responsible for ensuring it meets EU quality and safety standards.
-
If you suspect a counterfeit product:
-
Do not use it.
-
Contact the seller and the manufacturer listed on the label.
-
-
Report suspicious or illegal activity:
-
To An Garda Síochána: 1800 666 111 (fake product sellers)
-
To Revenue: 1800 295 295 (illegal imports)
-
To HPRA: via www.hpra.ie or email cosmetics@hpra.ie
-
-
If you experience any side effects:
-
Stop using the product immediately.
-
Report it to your healthcare professional, the manufacturer, or HPRA.
-
💅 Stay Safe When Shopping Online
-
Always buy from reputable sellers and known retailers.
-
Be cautious of unusually low prices or new sellers with limited reviews.
-
Check labels, barcodes, and spelling — small details often reveal a fake.
-
When in doubt, skip the deal. Your health is worth more than a discount.
