Buying second-hand baby and child equipment can be a practical way to save money while still providing everything your child needs. From strollers to garden swings, there is a wide range of items available.
However, when buying for children, safety should always be your first consideration.

Safety Marks
If purchasing toys or play equipment, check for the CE mark. This indicates that the product complies with EU safety standards, including requirements for non-toxic materials.
Some items may also display the EN71 mark, which relates specifically to toy safety standards.
If these safety marks are missing on products that require them, it is advisable not to proceed with the purchase.
Important Note
Certain childcare equipment, such as buggies, may not require a CE mark. However, any equipment that includes a toy element (for example, baby walkers with attached toys) should carry appropriate safety markings.
General Safety Checks
Before buying:
Ensure the item displays the name and address of the manufacturer or importer.
Where possible, request the original instruction booklet or packaging. This can provide important safety guidance, assembly instructions and age recommendations.
Check for missing or damaged parts that could create sharp edges or choking hazards.
Confirm the age suitability of the product, particularly if younger children in the household may also access it.
Ensure materials are not easily flammable.
For “sit and ride” toys, check that the item remains stable and has not become unsafe through wear and tear.
Car Seats
Second-hand car seats can only be considered safe if you are absolutely certain they have never been involved in a collision.
The Road Safety Authority does not recommend buying a second-hand car seat if you are unsure of its full history.
If considering one:
Ask when and where it was purchased.
Ask how much use it has had.
Confirm it has never been involved in an accident.
Request installation instructions and ensure it can be fitted correctly in your vehicle.
Correct installation is essential for safety.
Electrical Items
Exercise particular caution with second-hand electrical toys.
Inspect wiring and casing for damage.
Ensure there is no risk of exposed wires.
Check that battery compartments are secure and inaccessible to children.
Only purchase electrical items that appear fully insulated and in safe working condition.
Warranties
Manufacturers usually require proof of purchase to honour warranties.
If the item is still within its warranty period, ask the seller for proof of purchase. Without it, you may not be able to make a claim.
Product Recalls
Before purchasing, check whether the item has been subject to a recall.
You can:
Conduct a web search for the product name and model.
Visit the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) website and search for product recalls.
If you have safety concerns, you can contact the CCPC’s information line for guidance.
Final Advice
When buying second-hand baby or child equipment:
Inspect carefully.
