Most sales on DoneDeal go smoothly. A few simple precautions can help ensure yours does too.
Always use common sense when buying or selling, and keep safety front of mind throughout the process.
Meeting Buyers Safely
Communicate via the DoneDeal Message Centre.
Arrange a time and place you feel comfortable with.
Meet in a well-lit, busy public location where possible (CCTV adds extra reassurance).
If meeting somewhere private, don’t meet alone.
Tell someone you trust who you’re meeting, where and when.
Keep your mobile phone with you at all times.
If you live alone, there is no need to share that information.
If a buyer needs to enter your home:
Keep valuables out of sight.
Keep the meeting professional and focused on the item for sale.
Remember, buyers may also feel cautious about meeting a stranger — particularly if they’re bringing cash.
Never pay an advance fee to anyone who claims they can “find you buyers”.
Payment Safety
Do not hand over goods until you have received full payment.
Cash
The simplest payment method.
Not always suitable for large amounts.
If receiving a large sum in cash, consider having the notes checked by someone experienced in handling cash (e.g. retail or hospitality).
Bank Draft
Recommended for larger amounts.
-
Always verify the draft with the issuing bank before handing over the goods.
Call the bank directly, or
Visit a branch in person.
Never Accept:
Foreign cheques.
Keep payment simple and secure.
Selling a Vehicle?
When selling a vehicle, you must register the change of ownership.
The Citizens Information website provides detailed guidance on how to complete the ownership transfer correctly in Ireland.
Ensuring ownership is properly transferred protects both you and the buyer.
Important Information
Contracts for the sale or purchase of goods cannot be concluded on the DoneDeal website. Any agreement between you and the buyer must be made separately, outside of the DoneDeal platform. Please refer to our Terms & Conditions for more information.
