How to Make Phone Calls with Country Codes

Because DoneDeal includes ads from both the Republic of Ireland 🇮🇪 and Northern Ireland (UK) 🇬🇧, you may sometimes see different country codes on phone numbers in ads.

Here’s how to know which number to dial — and what the prefixes mean.

Step 1: Check the County in the Ad

Usually, the phone number matches the country of the county listed in the ad.

These counties use UK phone numbers (country code +44):

Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Derry (Londonderry), Tyrone

All other counties in Ireland use Irish phone numbers (country code +353).

Step 2: Understand the Prefixes

When calling a number from another country, replace the first 0 of the area code with the international call prefix and the country code.

Step 3: Example Calls Between Ireland and Northern Ireland

Tip:

On most smartphones, you can enter the + directly instead of typing 00 — both work the same.

Step 4: Landline Numbers in Northern Ireland

Landline numbers in Northern Ireland start with 028.

If you’re calling from the Republic of Ireland, replace 028 with 048.

Example:

If the ad shows 028 3839 1234, dial 048 3839 1234 from Ireland.

Step 5: Border Area Tip

People living close to the border sometimes use mobile phones registered in the opposite country.

If you’re unsure, try both versions of the number — one with +353 and one with +44 — or message the seller through the DoneDeal Message Centre first.
